Painter and illustrator Richard Dadd, who worked in the Victorian genre of fairy painting, was born in Chatham, studied at King's School, Rochester and the Royal Academy Schools, and died at Broadmoor Hospital in Crowthorne. About 235 of his works are in museums, among them the painting Negation of 1860, a portrait of his fellow painter Augustus Egg from 1838–1840 and a Portrait of a Girl drawn in 1838. The J. Paul Getty Museum, Tate and the Yale Center for British Art have the most. One hangs in a gallery now.
