Om målningen
Jan van Huysum's Still Life with Flowers, painted in 1723, is in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. He places the bouquet against a light park setting, departing from the dark backgrounds more usual in flower painting. This makes the arrangement appear to stand outdoors on a balustrade. The surrounding scenery includes a pond, loosely indicated leaves and a statue of Flora, the goddess associated with flowers. Van Huysum developed this approach within a genre widely popular in the eighteenth century. The painting hangs in room 1.1.
Med museets egna ord
In the 18th century, Van Huysum brought the extremely popular genre of flower painting to great heights. Instead of the usual dark background, he used a light one with a park landscape, creating the impression that the flowers are set out-of-doors on a balustrade. The décor here consists of a statue of Flora, the goddess of flowers, some cursorily painted foliage and a pond.
