Om målningen
Cornelis Troost painted his Self-Portrait in 1739. It is held by Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum. Having worked as an actor and theatrical scene painter, he understood how to construct illusion. Here he looks through a mirror towards both himself and the viewer. A blue-paper drawing, palette, curtain and pedestal establish depth around the reflected figure. His fashionable jabot provides a small display of technique: one white brushstroke suggests the fine batiste of the ruffles attached to his shirt. The portrait is on view in Room 1.1.
Med museets egna ord
As a former actor and scene painter, Troost understood illusion. In this self-portrait he gazes from a mirror at himself and at us. The curtain, pedestal, palette and drawing on blue paper create a sense of depth. Every detail testifies to his technical skill. Notice how he conveyed the fine batiste cloth of his fashionable jabot – the frill of ruffles attached to his shirt – with a single stroke of white paint.
