Om skulpturen

The Byzantine Panel with a Griffin, carved in marble between 1250 and 1300, is displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The creature turns its head within a circular frame; small crosses mark the centres of the four borders. The panel may have belonged to a tomb, where a griffin could serve as a guardian of the dead. It is in gallery 301.
