This statuette represents Mercury and is probably from the 18th century, made in the style of Alessandro Vittoria (1525-1608).
Vittoria was an Italian sculptor, stuccoist and architect. In the second half of the 16th century he became one of the most important sculptors active in Venice. On his arrival in Venice in 1543 he worked for Jacopo Sansovino (1486-1570).
The depicted Mercury (Greek counterpart: Hermes) is one of the 12 gods of Olympus. He often appears as a messenger of the gods or as a guide, with youthful attitudes, being graceful and athletic. He was the son and messenger of Jupiter.
