Teacher: Andrea del Verrocchio
1472
Master of the Guild of Saint Luke
At twenty Leonardo qualified as a master in the Guild of Saint Luke, the guild of artists and doctors of medicine. Even after his father set him up in his own workshop, he went on working and living with Verrocchio.
1476
Charged with sodomy; the case is dismissed
Leonardo, aged twenty-four, and three other young men were charged with sodomy; the charges were dismissed for lack of evidence. It has been speculated that the Medici used their influence, since one of the accused, Lionardo de Tornabuoni, was related to Lorenzo de' Medici.
1478
An independent commission: an altarpiece for the Signoria
Leonardo received a commission for an altarpiece for the Chapel of Saint Bernard in the Palazzo della Signoria, Florence's town hall — a sign of his independence from Verrocchio's workshop. It was never completed.
