На картине изображен красивый морской пейзаж: спокойная зеркальная гладь воды, в которой отражаются стоящие на якоре фламандские суда. Вдали видна узкая береговая полоса с отдельными строениями. Три четверти пространства полотна занимает небо, покрытое облаками. Эрмитажное произведение исполнено в зрелый период творчества художника, который характеризуется тональной манерой живописи.
