Rivera obtained from President Lázaro Cárdenas asylum in Mexico for the political exile Leon Trotsky and sheltered him and his wife Natalia Sedova in his own house; later a conflict arose between them.

Divorce from Frida Kahlo
Their mutual infidelities and his violent temper led to divorce in 1939; they remarried on 8 December 1940 in San Francisco.

Expelled from the Mexican section of the Fourth International
On 7 August 1939 Rivera was expelled from the Mexican section of the Trotskyist Fourth International.

Last trip to the United States, for the Golden Gate Exposition
Invited again by Pflueger, Rivera returned to the United States for the last time to paint a ten-panel mural for the Golden Gate International Exposition in San Francisco, for US$1,000 a month plus US$1,000 for travel.
