At the 1954 exhibition at the Sidney Janis Gallery in New York many young artists, among them Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns, saw Magritte’s work for the first time; Rauschenberg and Johns later bought his paintings.

The Museum of Modern Art in New York held the first of three American retrospectives of Magritte’s work — the only one in his lifetime.

Pancreatic cancer and an unfinished “Empire of Light”
He died of pancreatic cancer on 15 August 1967, aged 68, leaving unfinished a new version of his painting “The Empire of Light”.
