In het leven van Henri Rousseau
Het hele leven1884
Permission to copy in the Louvre
In 1884 Rousseau obtained official permission to copy paintings in the Louvre: he had no academic training but studied and copied the Old Masters there.
1886
Debut at the Salon des Indépendants
In 1886 Rousseau first showed his work to the public at the Salon des Indépendants, where beginners and self-taught artists shut out of the official Paris Salon exhibited; his first picture there was “Carnival Evening.”
1886–1893
Twenty paintings in seven years: ridicule and friends
Over the next seven years Rousseau, dividing his time between work, family and painting, showed about twenty pictures at the Salon des Indépendants; the public barely noticed them and critics kept mocking them, but his friends, the Impressionist painters, supported him, valuing his spontaneity and sincerity.
