Thomas Buchanan Read was an American painter, sculptor, poet and writer, born in Downingtown and died in New York City. Eight of his works are in Boston, Harvard and two Smithsonian museums in Washington. He painted writers of his day, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in 1869, Oliver Wendell Holmes in 1859 and William Cullen Bryant, as well as General Philip Henry Sheridan in 1871. Sheridan's Ride, of the same year, shows the general on horseback. Two of them are on view now.
