Felice Beato, a photographer born in Venice who died in Florence, held British and Italian citizenship and worked as a war photographer, photojournalist and photographer of architecture. He photographed the Crimean War in 1855, arrived in India in 1858, covered the Second Opium War in 1860, opened a studio with Charles Wirgman in 1864 and joined an expedition to Korea in 1871. About 1,260 of his photographs are in the Getty, Yale, MoMA, the Rijksmuseum, the National Gallery of Art and Strasbourg, among them the Residency at Lucknow (1858) and the Temple of Heaven in Peking (1860).
