Wandering through India: Calcutta and Benares
With Peter Orlovsky he travelled extensively across India, living half a year at a time in Calcutta (now Kolkata) and Benares (Varanasi). When the authorities were eager to expel him, his political connections, most notably Pupul Jayakar, helped him extend his stay.

Meetings with Tibetan teachers in India
During an early trip to India with Gary Snyder, whose chanting of the Prajnaparamita, in Ginsberg’s words, “blew my mind”, he met the Dalai Lama and the Karmapa at Rumtek Monastery and, in Kalimpong, Dudjom Rinpoche, who taught him not to cling to anything horrible or anything beautiful.

In Moscow: Voznesensky and Akhmadulina
He travelled to the USSR, where in Moscow he met the Sixties poets Andrei Voznesensky and Bella Akhmadulina.

King of May in Prague
In April, after Warsaw, he arrived in Prague, where at a youth street carnival he was elected “King of May” (Král Majáles).

Arrest in Prague and expulsion from Czechoslovakia
A week after being named King of May, Ginsberg was arrested for alleged drug use and public drunkenness, and the StB confiscated writings it considered lewd and morally dangerous; he was deported from Czechoslovakia on 7 May 1965.

International Poetry Incarnation at the Royal Albert Hall
The evening, organised by Ginsberg’s friend the filmmaker Barbara Rubin, drew an audience of 7,000 to the Royal Albert Hall; Ginsberg, Corso, Ferlinghetti, Adrian Mitchell and others read. Peter Whitehead filmed the event as “Wholly Communion”.
