生涯をすべて見る1896–1914
The Giselastrasse salon, a hub of the Russian colony
For 18 years the apartment of Jawlensky and Werefkin at Giselastrasse 23 remained one of the hubs of the Russian colony: besides well-known artists, its guests included Diaghilev and Nijinsky, Anna Pavlova and Eleonora Duse.
1914
War forces him to leave for Switzerland
With the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, Jawlensky had to leave Germany and settle in Switzerland. There he began his “Variations”, a cycle of landscape works.
1916
Meets Emmy Scheyer, “Galka”
In 1916 Jawlensky met Emmy Scheyer, whom he affectionately nicknamed Galka, the Russian word for jackdaw. Like Werefkin before her, she gave up her own work to champion his in the United States; later, thanks to her tireless promotion, the works of the Blue Four were shown in Germany and the US.
