Желание проникнуть в сокровенную глубину природы, выявить то, мимо чего проходили многие художники, увлеченные внешней красотой форм, с особой силой сказалось в рисунках мастера, над которыми он с увлечением работал в 1870-е годы – в период его творческой зрелости. Теперь он чаще прибегал к графитному карандашу, чем к стальному перу, чаще обращался к натурным рисункам, чем к рисованным картинам. Разнообразнее становились приемы изображения: от свободных линий и легких штрихов до довольно сложной светотеневой моделировки с применением растушки. Благодаря этому мы никогда не найдем у Шишкина однообразия, своего рода штампа в изображении зелени, листвы, стволов деревьев. Ирина Шувалова. «Музыка карандаша».

Marriage to Evgenia Vasilyeva
He married Evgenia Alexandrovna Vasilyeva, sister of the landscape painter Fyodor Vasilyev; the marriage produced sons Vladimir and Konstantin, who died in infancy, and a daughter, Lidia.

"Pine Forest" at the 1st Peredvizhniki Exhibition
The painting "Pine Forest. Mast-Timber Forest in Vyatka Province" was shown at the 1st Peredvizhniki exhibition in St. Petersburg, drew uniformly favorable reviews, and attracted the attention of Pavel Tretyakov; in March 1872 it won first prize in the competition of the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts.

Founding Member of the Society of Russian Aquafortists
He became a founding member of the Society of Russian Aquafortists; he practiced etching until the end of his life, devoting almost as much time to it as to painting.

Title of Professor
The Academy of Arts conferred the title of professor on Shishkin for his painting "Forest Wilderness," which it had acquired from him.

His Only Trip to the Crimea
Accompanied by the landscape painter Efim Volkov and his pupil Andrei Shilder, he toured the entire southern coast of the Crimea (Gurzuf, Alupka, Alushta, with an ascent of Ai-Petri); he brought back studies, drawings, and pastels, on the basis of which he painted pictures for the 8th Peredvizhniki exhibition of 1880.

Death of His Second Wife, Olga Lagoda
He lost his second wife, the painter Olga Lagoda-Shishkina; he went through an emotionally difficult period and for some time could not work, until the urge to create brought him back to life.
