In 1938 Nicholson is divorced from the painter Winifred Nicholson (other accounts say their marriage lasted from 1920 to 1933); the same year he marries Barbara Hepworth.

Moves with Hepworth to St Ives
In 1939 Nicholson moves with his wife, the sculptor Barbara Hepworth, to the Cornish town of St Ives, where they found a centre of abstract art; he lives for 19 years at Trezion, Salubrious Place.

Joins the St Ives Society of Artists
In 1943 Nicholson joins the St Ives Society of Artists.
