この絵画について

Cimabue's Celebrated Madonna, originally called Cimabue's [Celebrated] Madonna [is] Carried in Procession through the Streets of Florence, is an oil painting by English artist Frederic Leighton. Measuring more than two metres tall and more than five metres wide, the canvas was painted by Leighton from 1853 to 1855 in Rome as his first major work.

Since 1988 the work has been displayed in the National Gallery, London, on long-term loan from the Royal Collection, where it was long hung prominently, high above the main vestibule, directly beyond the entrance to the gallery, but more recently it has been in Room 45. In 2018 it was displayed at the top of the Sainsbury Wing staircase. In 2025 the work is no longer on display.

Leighton House has an oil sketch for the painting, and several preparatory drawings.

  1. 1852

His first journey on his own, to Rome

To immerse himself in the art of the great Italian painters, in 1852 Leighton made his first journey on his own and by November was in Rome, where the opera singer Adelaide Sartoris introduced him to society. In her salon he met William Thackeray and became close friends with the Brownings, as well as with Jean-Léon Gérôme and William Bouguereau.

  2. 1855

    Queen Victoria buys “Cimabue’s Madonna”

In 1855 Leighton finished “Cimabue’s Madonna” and sent it to London for the Royal Academy exhibition. The picture was a success, Queen Victoria bought it for 600 guineas, and the artist became the talk of England’s aristocratic circles.

  3. 1855

Years in Paris: Ingres, Delacroix, Corot, Millet

In 1855 Leighton visited the Exposition Universelle in Paris and, with interruptions, lived there for the next three years (by other accounts until 1859), perfecting his craft. In Paris he met Ingres, Delacroix, Corot and Millet.

  4. 1856

Meets the poet Henry William Greville

In Florence in 1856 Leighton met the poet Henry William Greville; theirs was an intense, romantically tinged relationship: the older man showered Leighton with letters, but his affection seems not to have been reciprocated. Leighton never married.
