この絵画について
『ブロードウェイ・ブギウギ』(Broadway Boogie Woogie)は、ピート・モンドリアンにより1940年にニューヨークに移った後の1942-3年に描かれた絵画。それ以前の作品と比較して、キャンバスはずっと多くの正方形により分割されている。モンドリアンはキャリアのほとんどを抽象作品を作成するのに費やしたが、この絵はマンハッタンの街のグリッドや、愛したアフリカ系アメリカ人のブルース音楽であるブギウギなど明確な現実世界の例に触発されている。1943年にニューヨーク市のバレンタインギャラリーにブラジルの彫刻家マリア・マルティンスの作品とモンドリアンのこの絵画が展示された後、マルティンスにより800ドルで購入された。マルティンスはのちにこの絵画をニューヨーク近代美術館に寄贈した。

Sailing from Liverpool to New York
After the Netherlands were invaded and Paris fell, Mondrian left London and on 23 September 1940 sailed from Liverpool aboard the Cunard White Star liner RMS Samaria for New York, where he remained until his death.

A night at Café Society after the rheumatism
The year before his seventieth birthday Mondrian marked his emergence from a long bout of rheumatism with a wild night out at Café Society in New York.
autumn 1943
His last studio on East 59th Street
In the autumn of 1943 Mondrian moved into his second and final Manhattan studio, painted the walls the same off-white as his easel and made furniture from orange and apple crates; he said that the eight large compositions of coloured paper on the walls made it the best space he had ever lived in.

Pneumonia: his final illness
Mondrian died of pneumonia after only a few months in his last studio; “Victory Boogie Woogie” was left unfinished.
