Maxime Dethomas was a French illustrator and theatrical designer active in the vibrant artistic circles of fin-de-siècle Paris. He was closely associated with the avant-garde milieu surrounding Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and the Nabi painters. He shared their interest in flattened forms, decorative surface, and the expressive potential of line. Most of his drawings fall into two groups: costume and stage designs for the theater and illustrations of daily life. The present drawing of a crowd gathered to hear speakers in a public park straddles the categories. It shows a slice of daily life, but its width, stylization, and compressed space give it the feeling of a stage set.
