Pasteur's portrait by Edelfelt is the best-known portrait of the French chemist Louis Pasteur. Painted by Albert Edelfelt (1854–1905) in 1885, the painting shows Pasteur in his laboratory at the rue d'Ulm, surrounded by his experimental apparatus, the innovative laboratory glassware used in the experimental methods, developed by him on the field of bacteriology in the late 19th century.
Pasteur is regarded as one of the main founders of bacteriology, and he is popularly known as the "father of microbiology".

A step towards Impressionism
Edelfelt took up features of Impressionism — parks, gardens and the seashore, intimate domestic scenes, the play of light on figures, rapid execution — yet, true to his realist training, never became a full Impressionist and kept his precise detail.

The Pasteur portrait triumphs at the Paris Salon
The portrait of Pasteur in his laboratory, painted in 1885 with the scientist — who had a good sense of public relations — helping to plan it, was a great success at the Salon of 1886 and became one of the most familiar images of him. It earned the painter the Legion of Honour.
