Mir Phulwari was the Nawab (governor) of Bengal in 1765-66, taking the title Najim ad-Daulah or ‘Star of State’. He died at the age of 16, reputedly from a fever caught at a party held in Murshidabad in honour of Robert Clive, who had helped Phulwari’s father Mir Ja’far to become Nawab. The painting was bought from the London dealer Arthur Churchill, and had been in the collection of H. T. Prinsep.
