A turn to daring colour
Roslin’s early portraits are painted in bright, cool colours under the influence of Jean-Marc Nattier and Hyacinthe Rigaud; from around the 1760s he begins to use daring colouring, as in “The Lady with the Veil” (1768) and “The Jennings Family” (1769).

A pension and a free apartment in the Louvre
Although a foreigner, often called Roslin le suédois (“Roslin the Swede”), he is granted a pension and a free apartment in the Louvre. By then he has painted several portraits of members of the French royal family and of foreign princes.

His wife, Marie-Suzanne Giroust, dies
His dearly loved wife, the pastel painter Marie-Suzanne Giroust (1734–1772), dies.

Receives the Swedish Order of Vasa
His native Sweden confers the Order of Vasa on him, one of the first to receive it; from then on he is also known as Roslin le Chevalier, “Roslin the knight”.
