Sulla scultura

Lewis is celebrated as the first artist of African, Mississauga Ojibwe, and Haitian heritage to garner international acclaim in the production of marble sculpture. This striking neoclassical bust portrait of poet and scholar Henry Wadsworth Longfellow demonstrates Lewis’s superlative skills at selecting and carving likenesses in stone. After working in Boston during the height of the U.S. Civil War, Lewis relocated to Italy in 1865, joining a prominent cohort of American women sculptors. Longfellow sat for Lewis briefly on a visit to Rome in 1871. This portrait came to Harvard soon thereafter as a gift from the artist.
