Moves to Paris for good
He takes leave of Italy and at 34 settles in Paris, where he stays for the rest of his life. He becomes a protégé of François Boucher, and his work quickly becomes fashionable. In Paris he is surrounded by Swedish visitors and is a good friend of the influential Swedish politician Count Carl Gustaf Tessin.
1753
Begins to exhibit at the Paris Salon
As a member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture he begins to show his work at the Salon, the official exhibition of the members’ work; from 1753 he takes part in it 18 times.
1765
Wins the portraitists’ competition
He wins a competition of portraitists with a portrait of the Duke de La Rochefoucauld (other accounts add: together with his family), although his main rival is the famous Jean-Baptiste Greuze.
1771
A pension and a free apartment in the Louvre
Although a foreigner, often called Roslin le suédois (“Roslin the Swede”), he is granted a pension and a free apartment in the Louvre. By then he has painted several portraits of members of the French royal family and of foreign princes.
1772
His wife, Marie-Suzanne Giroust, dies
His dearly loved wife, the pastel painter Marie-Suzanne Giroust (1734–1772), dies.
1774–1775
A visit to Sweden after his wife’s death
After his wife’s death he visits his native Sweden and paints members of the royal family. By then he has been elected a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts, as a foreign honorary member.
