Sulla scultura
This Meissen figure group depicts stock characters from the popular Italian travelling comic theatre the Commedia dell'Arte. The old gentleman is Pantalone who, wearing an unfashionable and outdated suit, is paying court to a beautiful young actress. She makes fun of him, pulling his beard in a flirtatious manner. The rich old man seduced by a much younger beautiful woman was a standard figure of fun in the 1700s, often satirised on the stage.
