Nella vita di François Gérard

Tutta la vita
  1. 1792–1837 · Luogo di lavoro

    Paris

  2. 1798

Salon of 1798: “Cupid and Psyche”

“The First Kiss of Cupid and Psyche”, painted in 1797 with the money from Isabey, brought Gérard the fame he had longed for; the many portraits of high society that followed established his reputation.

  3. c. 1800

    Opens a literary salon

His salon, frequented by friends, patrons and prospective clients, welcomed eminent figures of the age; Germaine de Staël, George Canning, Talleyrand and the Duke of Wellington wrote about the charm of his society.

  4. 1803

    The Legion of Honour

Benefiting from the patronage of the Bonaparte family, Gérard became “first painter” to Joséphine de Beauharnais and in 1803 was awarded the Legion of Honour.

  5. 1808–1810

The Salons of 1808 and 1810: eight and fourteen portraits

Eight of his portraits were shown at the Salon of 1808 and at least fourteen at the Salon of 1810 — only a small share of what he painted each year; figures of the Empire and the Restoration and the most famous men and women of Europe sat for him.

  6. 1809

    Baron of the Empire

Napoleon made Gérard a baron of the Empire, and from then on he was formally known as Baron Gérard.
