“The Sabine Women” shown with a mirror and a pamphlet
The painting was shown at the Palais du Luxembourg and then at the Salon in the Louvre; David had a large mirror hung before it so that visitors saw themselves against the battle, and each visitor was handed a pamphlet explaining his intention. The showing became a political event.
1804
Becomes the Emperor’s first painter
After the proclamation of the Empire in 1804 he became the official court painter of the regime — first painter to the Emperor Napoleon.

Flees to Switzerland after Waterloo
After Bonaparte’s defeat at Waterloo and the Bourbon restoration he was forced to flee to Switzerland; in August of the same year he returned to France.

Exile: moves to Brussels
Exiled from France for his part in the king’s execution, despite the intercession of the police minister Élie Decazes, he settled in Brussels, where he lived for the rest of his life.

Struck by a carriage outside a theatre
As he was leaving a theatre, a carriage struck him; he died later, on 29 December 1825.
