Keeps his “Book of Sundry Expenses”
In the Libro di spese diverse Lotto recorded his income and expenses and kept a register of his works. Together with his many letters, the book is the main source from which his life and work are reconstructed.
1549
A last move — to Ancona
Lotto's wanderings ended in Ancona, where he painted “The Assumption” (1550) for the church of San Francesco alle Scale. Towards the end of his life he found it ever harder to earn a living.
1550
A failed auction in Ancona
At about seventy Lotto put one of his works up for auction in Ancona, but the sale failed; as his account book records, this left him deeply disillusioned.
1552
A lay brother of the Holy House at Loreto
Always a deeply religious man, Lotto joined the Holy House sanctuary at Loreto as a lay brother and decorated its basilica of Santa Maria. Other accounts place him in Loreto from as early as 1549.
