Fame after the Academy Exhibition and the Title of Academician
He exhibited six of his portraits at the Imperial Academy of Arts and attracted universal attention; for the portrait of the architect A. F. Kokorinov the 35-year-old Levitzky received the title of academician.

The "Smolyanki" Portrait Series
Commissioned by Catherine II, he painted a series of portraits of pupils of the Smolny Institute for Noble Maidens, shown dancing, making music, and performing theatrical scenes — a major milestone in his art. Today the entire series is in the State Russian Museum.

Gallery of Russian Cultural Figures and the Vorontsov Family
In the 1780s he created a portrait gallery of figures of Russian culture (N. Lvov, N. Novikov, and others), and, on commission from Count A. I. Vorontsov, intimate portraits of the members of his family for a gallery in the Vorontsovs' new St. Petersburg mansion.

"Catherine II as Legislatrix"
Commissioned by Vice-Chancellor A. A. Bezborodko, he painted the allegorical portrait "Catherine II as Legislatrix in the Temple of the Goddess of Justice" after a program by N. A. Lvov; the picture inspired Derzhavin's ode "The Vision of Murza" and served as the original for a number of the artist's own replicas.

At the end of 1797 he was initiated by A. F. Labzin into the first three Masonic degrees on the recommendation of N. I. Novikov; he then belonged to Labzin's St. Petersburg lodge, "The Dying Sphinx."

Commissions from Empress Catherine II
Levitzky's name appears repeatedly in the empress's personal accounts: 1,000 rubles for two portraits of her (1773), 800 rubles for a portrait of the Prussian king, and 1,000 rubles for a large portrait of Catherine II (1778) — enormous sums for the time.

Commissioned by I. I. Betskoy (1771), he painted for the Moscow Foundling Home a ceremonial portrait of the mining magnate and philanthropist Prokofy Demidov — full-length, in a dressing gown, against a backdrop of stately architecture; the work was placed in the hall of the Home's Council.
