Le Citron, également Citron est une nature morte du peintre Français Édouard Manet peinte à l'huile sur toile vers 1880 présentant un unique citron posé allongé sur une assiette sombre. Le Citron appartient à l'œuvre tardive de Manet, quand il crée une série de natures mortes dans le style de l'impressionnisme, choisissant à plusieurs reprises des objets individuels comme motifs. Le tableau n'a pas de modèle direct, mais s'inscrit dans la tradition de la peinture baroque hollandaise et espagnole. Le Citron est dans la collection du musée d'Orsay à Paris.

Although his own work influenced and anticipated the Impressionist style, Manet resisted involvement in Impressionist exhibitions: he did not wish to be seen as the representative of a group identity and held that modern artists should seek to exhibit at the Salon.

Only in 1879 did the Salon appreciate Manet's perseverance: his canvases “In the Conservatory” and “In the Boat” were received very warmly.

The first attack of rheumatism and ataxia
In September 1879 Manet suffered his first acute attack of rheumatism; it soon turned out that he had ataxia, a disorder of movement coordination. The illness progressed rapidly and limited his creative possibilities.
