La vie entière
  1. 1862

Returns to Paris and is presented at court

Back in Paris, he is presented to the imperial court by his friend and patron Eugène d’Alvin de Piennes, soon to become the Empress’s chamberlain, and becomes a sought-after portraitist, though he was never a court official. An admirer of Napoleon III, Carpeaux also contrived a face-to-face meeting with the emperor at Amiens, where he persuaded him to commission a marble statue.

  2. 1863

The empress buys the “Neapolitan Fisherboy”

He shows the marble Neapolitan Fisherboy with a Shell at the Salon of 1863 — he had sent the plaster version to the Academy while still a student in Rome; the statue is bought for Empress Eugénie, and, thanks to its popularity, Carpeaux makes a number of reproductions and variations in marble and bronze.

  3. 1863

First Salon of the National Society of Fine Arts

He takes part in the first Salon of the National Society of Fine Arts in Paris.
