A Tudor house at 16 Cheyne Walk
After his wife’s death Rossetti leased a Tudor house at 16 Cheyne Walk in Chelsea, where he lived for twenty years surrounded by extravagant furnishings and a parade of exotic birds and animals.

“Ballads and Sonnets,” the second volume
In 1881 Rossetti published a second volume of poems, “Ballads and Sonnets,” which included the remaining sonnets of “The House of Life” sequence.

A mild stroke
On 11 December 1881 Rossetti suffered a mild stroke, leaving his sight dim and his left side paralysed. For some years he had been mostly housebound on account of obesity, possible diabetes, chloral addiction and an excessive intake of alcohol, especially whisky.
