1950s
Consults on Hollywood productions
In the 1950s he works as a consultant on various Hollywood productions; he will later direct a series of documentaries on Black ghetto life commissioned by National Educational Television.

Photo essay “The Restraints: Open and Hidden”
Life publishes his photo essay on the effects of racial segregation, following the everyday lives of three families — the Thorntons, Causeys and Tanners — in and near Mobile, Alabama. Instead of demonstrations, boycotts and brutality, he emphasises the prosaic details of their lives.
