À propos du tableau

Georgia O’Keeffe traveled to the Gaspé Peninsula, in Quebec, Canada, in the summer of 1932, accompanied by Alfred Stieglitz’s niece, Georgia Engelhard, who was also an artist. The old barns and crosses built by the region’s French settlers fascinated O’Keeffe, as did the lush green terrain, which she featured in Green Mountains, Canada. In this panoramic landscape, she captured the massive appearance of the mountains as they rise sharply from the water’s edge. Although she enjoyed her trip to Canada, and returned again that year, ultimately O’Keeffe preferred the New Mexican landscape, specifically its brilliant sunshine.

  2. 1931

    Meets Frida Kahlo

At the opening of Diego Rivera’s solo exhibition at MoMA, Frida Kahlo met O’Keeffe and a friendship developed. They stayed in touch while O’Keeffe recovered from a nervous breakdown in hospital and then in Bermuda, and in the 1950s they visited each other’s homes on a couple of occasions.

  3. 1932–1934

Nervous breakdown and two months in hospital

A nervous breakdown, largely brought on by Stieglitz’s affair with Dorothy Norman, kept O’Keeffe from working from late 1932, and in 1933 she spent two months in hospital; in 1933 and 1934 she recuperated in Bermuda. She began painting again in January 1934.

  4. 1934

    Moves to Ghost Ranch

From August 1934 she lived at Ghost Ranch, north of Abiquiú; the varicoloured cliffs around the ranch inspired some of her most famous landscapes. In 1940 she moved into a house on the ranch property.
