Daruma (Bodhidharma in Sanskrit) is traditionally believed to have died on October 5, the date on which his death is commemorated by Zen temples in Japan. Daruma was a semilegendary Buddhist monk who lived during the 5th century and is traditionally credited with transmitting Chan (Zen in Japanese) Buddhism from India to China.
