    Film: “Balkan Erotic Epic” and “Dangerous Games”

    In 2006 she directed the short “Balkan Erotic Epic” for Destricted, a compilation of erotic films, and in 2008 “Dangerous Games” for the film project “Stories on Human Rights”.

    Founds the Marina Abramović Institute

    She founded the Marina Abramović Institute (MAI), a non-profit foundation for performance art focused on durational work and the “Abramović Method”; in 2007 she bought for it a building of 1933 in Hudson, New York, formerly a theatre and community tennis centre.

    Friendship with James Franco

    In 2009 the actor James Franco interviewed her for The Wall Street Journal; in 2010 he visited her during “The Artist Is Present”, and in 2012 the two attended the Met Gala together.

    Ulay arrives at the opening — and she weeps

    On the day the show opened Ulay made a surprise appearance in the atrium and sat opposite her; she could not hold back her tears and reached out to him across the table — a video of the moment went viral.

    MoMA retrospective: “The Artist Is Present”

    It was her first retrospective and the largest exhibition of performance art in MoMA’s history (curated by Klaus Biesenbach); in the atrium she sat motionless for 736½ hours while visitors took turns sitting opposite her — about fifteen hundred people who held her gaze.
