Сюита "Богатырский фриз"

В 1909-1910 годах Рерих исполнил серию панно "Богатырский фриз" для особняка видного промышленника и почетного гражданина Петербурга Ф. Г. Бажанова. Дом был построен по проекту архитектора П. Р. Алешина в 1907-1908 годах в стиле модерн. Каждый его интерьер отличался неповторимым оформлением, но тема героической Древней Руси была доминирующей. Гостиную украшал майоликовый камин "Вольга и Микула", исполненный по эскизу М. А. Врубеля, а панно Рериха размещались в столовой. Серия состояла из восьми сюжетных ("Садко", "Витязь", "Баян", "Илья Муромец", "Микула Селянинович", "Город", "Вольга Святославович", "Соловей-разбойник") и одиннадцати декоративных композиций. Создание монументального "Богатырского фриза" стало в творчестве художника кульминацией его обращения к теме былин.

  1. 1909

    Elected an academician

    In 1909 Roerich is elected an academician of the Imperial Academy of Arts, as well as a member of the Council of the Society for the Protection and Preservation of Monuments of Art and Antiquity in Russia and chairman of the Commission of the Museum of Pre-Petrine Art and Life.

  2. 1909–1913

    Diaghilev's Russian Seasons: sets and a libretto

    In Paris, Borodin's “Polovtsian Dances” from “Prince Igor” and Rimsky-Korsakov's “The Maid of Pskov” are staged in Roerich's designs; for the ballet “The Rite of Spring”, to music by Stravinsky, he creates the costumes and sets and also writes the libretto.

    Becomes head of “The World of Art”

    From 1910 Roerich heads the artistic association “The World of Art”, whose members include Benois, Bakst, Grabar, Serov, Petrov-Vodkin, Kustodiev, Ostroumova-Lebedeva, Serebriakova and others.

    Novgorod: excavations and the defence of the Saviour at Nereditsa

    In summer 1910 Roerich carries out the first archaeological excavations in Novgorod together with Nikolai Makarenko, and the same year he campaigns for the fate of the Church of the Saviour at Nereditsa and the Rurik Gorodishche; he is also troubled by crude restorations of churches in Yaroslavl, Pskov and Kostroma.
