A partnership with Lauretta Vinciarelli
Around 1978 Judd becomes involved, professionally and romantically, with Lauretta Vinciarelli, an Italian-born architect and artist; for roughly a decade she lives and works with him in Marfa and New York and collaborates on projects in Providence and Cleveland, and her influence shows in his architecture and furniture. In 1986 William C. Agee reports in Architectural Digest that the two are starting a firm.
1986
The Chinati Foundation opens
In 1986 the Chinati Foundation opens on the site of the former fort as a non-profit art foundation dedicated to Judd and his contemporaries; its permanent collection includes large-scale works by Judd, John Chamberlain, Dan Flavin, Carl Andre, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Irwin and others. It is meant to work towards Judd’s goal of bringing art, architecture and land together into a coherent whole; his own work there includes 15 outdoor works in concrete and 100 aluminium pieces.
