Volunteer at the Front at 62
He volunteered for the front in the First World War; the decision was prompted by his son's wounding at the front and the bombardment of the cathedral of his native Reims on September 19, 1914. His front-line drawings were published as postcards, including in England.

He presented his native Reims with a large collection of his drawings; part of his war drawings are kept in the Museum of Fine Arts of Reims.
