Sobre la obra
The Diverting History of John Gilpin was published in 1878 by George Routledge & Sons. It was one of the first ‘Picture Books’ created as part of the collaboration of illustrator Randolph Caldecott and Edmund Evans, an innovative wood engraver and printmaker. Two picture books, printed in full colour, were published annually. They were sold for one shilling each as an affordable alternative to the hand-coloured children’s books that were more common previously. The original story was written by William Cowper in 1782, but Caldecott’s version was well received. Following the publication of this book, artist Paul Gaugin commended Caldecott’s work as ‘the true spirit of drawing’. The success of John Gilpin meant Caldecott and Evans continued creating their 'Picture Books' until Caldecott’s death in 1886.
