Watercolour sketch created for publication in an illustrated newspaper or magazine, probably The Penny Illustrated Press. It is captioned 'Royal Military Tournament, Agricultural Hall' and shows a group of cavalry soldiers riding into battle, their sword's upraised.

The illustration signed and dated with the artist's initials in the bottom right hand corner, and annotation on the rear suggests it was drawn by Rossi Ashton in 1897.

This item is one of several theatrical drawings from a collection of sketches commissioned from contemporary artists to be printed in illustrated magazines. The collection was donated to the museum by Sir William James Ingram in 1914.
