Leaves Venice after working for Patriarch Grimani
In 1565 Zuccaro leaves Venice. He had come here, leaving his work at the Villa Farnese at Caprarola, to serve a private patron, Giovanni Grimani, patriarch of Aquileia: he made decorations for the Palazzo Grimani di Santa Maria Formosa, painted frescoes and the altarpiece of the patriarch’s chapel in San Francesco della Vigna, and copied works of 15th- and 16th-century masters, including pages of the Grimani Breviary, but failed to obtain the commissions for the Scuola di San Rocco and the Paradise fresco in the Doge’s Palace.

Travels with Palladio to Cividale del Friuli
In Venice, Zuccaro meets the architect Palladio and the Florentine writer Anton Francesco Doni, who introduce him to various literary and artistic academies; he collaborates with Palladio on set designs for the theatre company Compagnia della Calza degli Accesi, and in March 1565 the two visit Cividale del Friuli together.

Returns to Rome and finds success
After returning to Rome in 1566 he finds artistic success with his “Annunciation” (lost) in the church of the Jesuits in Piazza del Collegio Romano and with frescoes in the Villa d’Este at Tivoli.

His brother Taddeo dies suddenly
His brother Taddeo dies suddenly, aged 37; Federico takes over all of his ongoing commissions, which keep him busy for many years, including extensive work on the fresco decorations at the Villa Farnese at Caprarola.

Dispute with Cardinal Farnese: dismissed from Caprarola
Over a dispute about payments, Cardinal Farnese sends Zuccaro away from Caprarola, where he is replaced by Jacopo Bertoia of Parma. In the same year, with Taddeo’s team of assistants dispersed, Federico begins to work mostly for the free market.
