About the painting
In Greek mythology, the nymph Daphne escaped from the god Apollo by transforming herself into a laurel tree. As depicted here, another suitor, Leucippus, disguised himself as a girl to join Daphne and her companions when they were bathing, but was killed when his true identity was discovered.
