In 1885 Toulouse-Lautrec met Suzanne Valadon, painted several portraits of her, and supported her artistic ambitions; they are believed to have been lovers, and their relationship ended in a break.

First Showings at the Mirliton Cabaret
In 1885 Toulouse-Lautrec began exhibiting his works at Aristide Bruant's cabaret, Le Mirliton.

Exhibition in Toulouse under the Pseudonym "Tréclau"
Having completed his training, Toulouse-Lautrec took part in an 1887 exhibition in Toulouse under the pseudonym "Tréclau," a verlan inversion of the name Lautrec; he later exhibited in Paris with Van Gogh and Louis Anquetin.

Eleven Works at the Les XX Exhibition in Brussels
At the invitation of the Belgian critic Octave Maus, Lautrec presented eleven works at the exhibition of the group Les XX in Brussels; Theo van Gogh bought the painting "Rice Powder" for 150 francs for the Goupil & Cie gallery.

Poster Commission for the Newly Opened Moulin Rouge
With the opening of the Moulin Rouge cabaret in 1889, Toulouse-Lautrec received a commission for a series of posters; the cabaret reserved a table for him and displayed his paintings, and the poster work gave him an income of his own.
