Тема ярмарки появляется в творчестве Кустодиева еще в годы учебы в Академии художеств. Под впечатлением от посещения базара небольшого волжского городка Кинешмы он выбирает тему диплома – «Базар в деревне». В начале ХХ века в России ярмарки были не только местом торговли, но и местом отдыха. Рядом с торговыми рядами, строились карусели, балаганные театры, продавались лубочные картинки, гуляла празднично одетая публика.

Кустодиев восхищался увиденным: «Ярмарка была такая, что я стоял как обалделый. Ах, если бы я обладал сверхчеловеческой способностью все это запечатлеть». В 1906 году он создает свою первую «Ярмарку». В 1907-м ее приобретает Третьяковская галерея, и в том же году художник получает заказ – исполнить картину на ту же тему от знаменитого коллекционера французской живописи Ивана Абрамовича Морозова. Это было настоящим признанием молодого художника. Вновь обращаясь к этому сюжету, Кустодиев не повторяет собственную картину, а создает принципиально новый по композиции вариант. Исчезли узнаваемые приметы конкретного города – церкви Кинешмы. Зритель наблюдает за происходящей сценой из-за прилавка продавца, как будто из театральной ложи, перед которой чуть в отдалении освещенное ярким светом разворачивается ярмарочное действо.

  1. 1905–1907

    Cartoonist for Zhupel, Adskaya Pochta and Iskry

    Kustodiev worked as a cartoonist for the satirical magazine Zhupel — home of his well-known drawing “Introduction. Moscow” — and after it was closed drew for Adskaya Pochta and Iskry.

  2. 1907

    Grand gold medal in Venice

    Kustodiev won the grand gold medal at the International Art Exhibition in Venice.

  3. 1907

    Death of his infant son Igor

    The Kustodievs' third child, Igor, died of meningitis at eleven months old.

  4. 1909

    First signs of his spinal illness

    Kustodiev showed the first signs of a spinal cord tumour (other accounts call it tuberculosis of the spine), which in time confined him to a wheelchair.

  5. 1909

    Elected Academician of painting

    On the nomination of Repin and other professors, Kustodiev was elected an Academician of painting of the Imperial Academy of Arts.

  6. 1910

    Joins the World of Art

    Kustodiev first met the artists of the World of Art at the time of the 1905 Revolution; in 1910 he joined their association and subsequently took part in all their exhibitions.
