In the life of Ansel Adams

The whole life
  1. 1970s

New prints, and independence from commissions

In the 1970s Adams reprints negatives from his vault, in part to satisfy the demand of art museums that had recently established departments of photography. Many of the “Moonrise” prints are made during these years, and their sale finally gives him financial independence from commercial projects.

  2. 1971

The Sierra Club names a conservation photography award after him

In 1971 the Sierra Club establishes the Ansel Adams Award for Conservation Photography.

  3. 1972

Photographs in support of Proposition 20

In 1972 Adams contributes images to publicize Proposition 20, which authorized the state to regulate development along portions of the California coast.

  4. 1974

A retrospective at the Met and an exhibition in Arles

In 1974 Adams has a major retrospective at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; the same year he exhibits at the Rencontres d'Arles, an annual summer photography festival in France.
