About the sculpture

Before setting up his own workshop in 1600, Antonio Susini (active ca. 1575; d. 1624) was one of Giambologna’s principal assistants. His figure of Venus admiring her buttocks derives from a celebrated antique marble statue that had recently been excavated from the site of Emperor Nero’s Golden House in Rome, the Callipygian Venus (now Museo Nazionale, Naples). It is an excellent cast, typical of Susini’s fine craftsmanship.
