The whole life
  1. 1930s

Works for the Red Cross and the TVA

During the Great Depression Hine again works for the Red Cross, photographing drought relief in the American South, and for the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), documenting life in the mountains of eastern Tennessee.

  2. 1936

Becomes chief photographer of the WPA research project

Hine is selected as chief photographer for the National Research Project of the Works Progress Administration, which studied changes in industry and their effect on employment; his work there was not completed.

  3. last years of life

Loses his patrons and his house

In the last years of his life Hine lost government and corporate patronage; he hoped to join the Farm Security Administration photography project and wrote repeatedly to Roy Stryker, but Stryker always refused. Few people were interested in his work, and Hine lost his house and applied for welfare.
