In the life of Cy Twombly
The whole life1993
Photographs at the Matthew Marks Gallery
The Matthew Marks Gallery in New York shows a selection of Twombly’s photographs: large blurry colour images of tulips, trees and ancient busts, based on his Polaroids.
1994
Retrospective at MoMA in New York
The retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art travels on to Houston, Los Angeles and Berlin. The same year the curator Kirk Varnedoe calls Twombly’s work influential among artists, discomfiting to many critics and difficult even for sophisticated initiates of postwar art.
1995
The Cy Twombly Pavilion opens in Houston
The Cy Twombly Pavilion of the Menil Collection, designed by Renzo Piano, houses more than thirty of his paintings, sculptures and works on paper dating from 1953 to 1994 (other accounts say works made from 1954 on).
1995
Gives “The Four Seasons” to MoMA
The Four Seasons enters the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York as a gift from the artist.
2001
Awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale
Twombly is awarded the Golden Lion at the 49th Venice Biennale.
2001
The first exhibition devoted entirely to his sculpture
The Menil Collection, the Kunstmuseum Basel and the National Gallery of Art present sixty-six of Twombly’s sculptures made from 1946 to 1998; other accounts place the large exhibition of his sculpture in Basel as early as 2000.
