Meanwhile, in the life of Francis Picabia

The whole life
  1. after 1899

Shows at the Salon des Indépendants

After 1899 Picabia began showing at the Salon des Indépendants and, as an Impressionist, soon made something of a name in Parisian art circles.

  2. c. 1899

    Living by painting; 127 cars

From the age of twenty Picabia lived by painting; later, inheriting his mother's money, he became far wealthier than most of his peers, buying at least one new sports car a year — 127 in all.

  3. 1902

A journey to Spain and a turn towards Fauvism

After a journey to Spain in 1902, Picabia's interests gradually shifted from Impressionism towards the colourful, defiantly bright “Spanish” manner of the Fauves.

  4. 1903–1908

Critics accuse him of copying Sisley

In 1903–1908 Picabia painted small churches, lanes, Paris rooftops, riverbanks and barges under the influence of Alfred Sisley; critics charged him with copying Sisley, Monet and Signac. Feeling his style was outdated, he began to look for a new approach.
